snow & ice

when the wind winds down after an overnight snowstorm, it’s the perfect time to get all of your snow gear on and go out to play in the snow!

the photo above was taken on the frozen lake (devils lake) which a bunch of ice houses in the background. it is one of the best ice fishing places in the entire midwest πŸ™‚ i love the landscape of this photo because you can see the folds the wind makes in the snow on the ice, and how low the sun already is at 2-3pm in the afternoon.

the benefit of playing in this snow right after the snow storm in this part of the state, is that it’s so cold that the snow is not wet, but dry, making it easy to play in the snow and wade through the massive drifts, and most importantly, to make really nice snow angels! when you have wet snow (because it warms up due to higher temps) it is compacted very easily and makes it harder to explore longer distances or to drag a sled over it.

it brought me back to my younger days when i used to go play in the snow at our lake side cabin at brush lake. i even used to skate on the ice on the lake and sled down the hill that the cabin sits on overlooking the lake. it’s so much fun getting all bundled up with boots, snowpants, big coat, hat, gloves and scarf! you look like a big bundle of joy playing in the snow all wrapped up like a big christmas present πŸ™‚
